Supporting Safety at T&M Plant Hire

Sentinel Systems is completely committed to safety systems in the commercial vehicle industry. We’ve always prioritised proactive solutions that minimise risks to drivers, pedestrians, and operators. That's why we’re thrilled to work with T&M Plant Hire, a company that shares our commitment to safety.

“As a business owner, the buck stops with me. We do everything we can to minimise risk and working with Sentinel, we’ve got equipment that supports that goal and an ongoing relationship that will continue helping our culture of safety flourish.”

Terry Beasley, Company Director, T&M Plant Hire

T&M Plant Hire are the experts in creating bespoke bowsers to handle any project challenge, whether it's on the road, air, rail, or construction site. In fact, they boast the largest fleet of bowsers across the UK. What truly sets T&M apart is its unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional service without sacrificing safety.

They’re currently working on a variety of major infrastructure projects in the UK, including HS2, the A14 re-widening, and Junction 10 works on the M25. The calibre of work they’re involved in speaks to the reputation they have built over the past three decades, so working with them shows that our solution is built for successful businesses that take safety seriously.

With a fleet of over 200 vehicles, ranging from vans to arctics, T&M Plant Hire needed a reliable safety system that could keep their drivers on the road and in the yard, as well as the other contractors they work around, safe at all times. The project that we have rolled out so far has involved fitting 87 of their large vehicles, primarily MAN chassis, with ultrasonic reverse sensing capability.

Zooming In

To get slightly technical for just a moment, the product we have provided and installed is an autobraking ultrasonic kit that includes a pair of ultrasonic sensors, an internal sounder, a white noise alarm, and an override switch for the reversing system when used in known tight areas.

The twin ultrasonic autobraking system is only active in reverse and is complimented with an externally mounted white noise reverse alarm, as well as an internal sounder that is mounted in the cab to alert the driver of objects coming into his close proximity at the rear.

When the sensors detect an object the system will apply the brakes of the vehicle at a pre-defined distance. The brakes are held for 3 seconds before automatically released so the driver can continue reversing if the object has moved or can manoeuvre to avoid it safely. If the object remains in view of the sensors and is stationary, the brake output will remain off, enabling the vehicle to be reversed up to loading bays. At this point, we advise the use of a banksman to ensure no pedestrians walk behind the vehicle at this moment.

“Throughout the project, if ever we needed help, Sentinel were there. You can’t put a price on that level of service and we always aim to work with partners who operate the way we do.”

We also provided training so that their team could fit the units themselves ensuring that the ultrasonic sensors were fitted correctly on every vehicle. This has the added benefit of reducing the time it takes to get a new vehicle out on the road. With their technicians able to understand the system, and with us only ever being a phone call away, they’re now set to take in kits and finish the rest of their fleet.

T&M have a history of being proactive when it comes to adopting tech to help with safety. They were some of the first in their sector to use reverse cameras and now armed with additional reversing aids they’re set to continue that trend and working with partners like us, find new safety solutions. We are thrilled to work with T&M Plant Hire and are excited to continue to work with them as they take on new projects.
